With only 95 game wardens patrolling the woods and waters of the State of Maine, game wardens increasingly rely on the "eyes and ears" of concerned citizens, sportsmen and women to help expose poachers of Maine's precious fish and wildlife resources. Since the program's inception in 1989, hundreds of poachers have been apprehended. The true measure of the success of Operation Game Thief can be measured by the publics' willingness to report these violations.
Please click on the Case Files below for detailed summaries of cases where a concerned citizen reported a fish and game violation to Operation Game Thief. In each of these calls, a game warden responded, investigated and was able to issue a summons or an arrest of the poacher. In all of these cases, the caller was able to remain anonymous as well as collect a cash reward, if they wished.
