Case File  #21   November 2009

Illegally Placing Bait to Hunt Deer

On November 9, 2009, Game Warden Troy Dauphinee received an Operation Game Thief (OGT) complaint of a grain pile in the woods with a trail camera pointed at the grain pile in Indian Stream Township in Piscataquis County. Warden Dauphinee noted that the pile of grain was largely cleaned up.

On November 27, 2009, Warden Dauphinee was patrolling in the area when he noticed a vehicle parked on the road that the grain pile was on. Warden Dauphinee walked into the area and found a poacher sitting in a climbing tree stand facing and overlooking a new grain pile while holding a loaded rifle.

Warden Dauphinee spoke with the poacher and, within a couple of minutes, the poacher admitted to having placed the grain that day and that he was hunting for deer. The camera was seized as evidence and the poacher was charged with hunting deer over bait. The poacher was warned for not wearing his blaze orange hat on while in the tree stand.

The fact that this violation occurred in a remote area and a concerned citizen reported the violation to Operation Game Thief is a testament to the honest sportsmen who have no tolerance for poaching. This also is an example of great warden work and follow-up on an OGT complaint.
